Released by Disney in 1957, Johnny Tremain is based on Johnny Tremain, the classic historical novel by Esther Forbes, which won the 1944 Newbery Medal.
Set in Boston during the years leading up to the American Revolution, the story follows young silversmith apprentice Johnny Tremain, whose promising future is shattered by a devastating hand injury. As he struggles to find his place in the world, he becomes involved with the Sons of Liberty and witnesses many of the events that helped spark the American Revolution.
Disney’s adaptation combines coming-of-age drama with American history, introducing viewers to figures such as Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Dr. Joseph Warren.
